Values

Home / About / Values

One of the unique aspects of the Asian Martial Arts of Japan, China, & Korea, is that they value the overall development of an individual's character, as much, if not more, than the actual physical skills that are forged through rigorous training.  The Classical Martial Arts / Sciences are taught in an atmosphere that promotes Honesty, Loyalty, Respect, Kindness, Dedication, Discipline, Responsibility, Courage, Health, Knowledge, Community, & Family.  As Gichin Funakoshi (1868-1957), the Founder of modern-day Karate-Do, famously said, "The ultimate aim of karate lies not in victory nor defeat, but in the perfection of the character of its participants".  Unfortunately, with the rise of modern day combat sports, such as Mixed Martial Arts, many of these time-honored values have been stripped away from training.  It is for this reason that Kenukan Academy supports Olympic-standard organizations that are congruent with the values cherished in the Classical Martial Arts.  Specifically, the Kenukan Academy believes in the following core values:

HONESTY

A person's personal, business, academic, and family life should be conducted honestly, and should never accommodate lying, cheating, or stealing.

LOYALTY

A person should be faithful and supportive to one's family, colleagues, and friends.

RESPECT

Not only should a person show respect to those that are senior, but to society, institutions, other nations, cultures, and all aspects of life, and nature.

KINDNESS

The world would be a better place if people would be kind and compassionate towards others, especially those less fortunate.

DEDICATION

To dedicate oneself to achieving goals that have a positive individual or societal impact is one of the best contributions one can make.

DISCIPLINE

In order to achieve personal and professional goals, one must discipline both the mind and body into conformity.

HEALTH

Taking care of one's body, including proper diet, exercise, avoiding the use of harmful drugs, and safeguarding against alcohol abuse, is one of the key components to a happy and healthy life.

KNOWLEDGE

The development of mind, both academically & psychologically, is one of the major contributors to long term success and positive mental well being.

COMMUNITY

To give back to one's community, especially to those less fortunate, is one of the most gratifying contributions one can make.
